Composting Toilet Systems Aid Organic Waste Recycling

Sewage can be stopped with the aid of composting toilet systems and there is no doubt that landfills are rapidly filling and nearing capacity and that the price of properly disposing of garbage and sewage is on the rise. In some areas, some relief has been brought about by organic waste recycling efforts. In addition, this kind of recycling of organic material can also help reduce the dangers of ground water contamination and can help organic farmers prepare soil that is healthier for growing.
According to researchers, large cities and substantial animal-raising facilities end up wasting tons and tons of natural resources every day, while polluting lakes, rivers and oceans when they allow their organic refuse, manure and sewage to be discarded. Experts say that a much better use of this material is to regard it as what it really is, a form of wealth that is being squandered. This waste of significant natural resources can be tapped into with proper organic recycling efforts composting toilet systems can have organic kitchen waste added into the rotating drum.

Instead of spending huge sums of money to handle, treat, transport and store such waste, composting toilet systems could be installed, people say this money could be better used to set up ways to improve organic waste recycling. This has the potential to transform a major expense for most municipalities into a new source of income while also helping to cleanup the environment.

A recent report that studied the issue noted that landfills are nearing capacity in many countries around the globe and that the organic waste material that is simply allowed to rot ends up releasing methane gasses into the environment and leaching acids into groundwater systems. The report also indicated that there are 13 US states that are expected to be completely out of landfill capacity in ten years or less, which means that recycling options must be seriously considered.

One researcher pointed out that municipalities in all industrialized nations spend massive amounts of taxpayers’ money to get rid of valuable organic nutrients. This is a bad habit. He goes on to say that with some careful thought and a changed perspective on recycling composting programs, these cities could readily turn their organic waste into a revenue steam that would benefit the environment and significantly relieve the taxpayers’ burden.

The technology and the systems are already available, and are in use in many other areas. In the province of Tanum, Sweden, a low-water consumption composting toilet system has been instituted.

This composting toilet system uses only one seventh the amount of water that is used in traditional flush toilet systems and also eliminates the maintenance of extensive sewage systems and treatments plants. In addition, this method of recycling waste converts the organic sewage and garbage into viable compost products that are both usable and suitable for selling.

Once composting toilet systems and organic waste recycling is established in an area, the sewage waste from municipalities and from animal producers goes through a waste treatment process to make the material safe for use in organic gardens and farms. It has also been estimated that the compost produced by this use of organic waste could provide as much as 15 percent of the nutrients for soil treatment that is now being supplied by fertilizers.

Water recycling helps to reduce the operating costs and improving the image in front of customers, hotels have realized the importance of becoming environment friendly. All recycling is the first step towards becoming environment friendly.

For successful waste recycling and other recycling in hotels, waste assessment should be done and later an appropriate recycling program needs to be set up in all areas analyzed.

Any water that has been used in the hotel, other than <a href="http://www.compostingtoiletsystem.net/”>water from toilets, is known as grey water.

Grey Water can further be used for other purposes like landscape irrigation.
Why to use Grey Water?

Plants can thrive on recycling water that contains small bits of compost, so it is a waste irrigating plants with drinking water in large amount. Grey Water reduces the amount of treated water that must be saved for bathing and drinking purposes.
Water Recycling or reuse of grey water plays an important part in solving many ecological problems.

How recycling is done?

Water is recyled by collected from shower drains, laundry etc. then filtered and pumped to a supply line reducing the water consumption.

Benefits of grey water recycling

The benefits of Water recycling are as follows:

1.Plant Growth: Since plants can survive on water that has a certain amount of compost, grey water aids plant growth and helps in making a landscape flourish where enough water may not be available for growth of plants.

2.Reduced fresh water usage: In regions where irrigation is needed, water recycling could replace fresh water that helps in saving money and increasing water supply.

3.Extended life and capacity of septic tank: Grey water puts less strain on the septic tank or the treatment plan and increases its life. Decreased wastewater flow means effectiveness at lower costs. Or use a Composting waterless toilet that does not require a septic tank or even sewage pipes.

4.Effective Purification: The region of the soil that is biologically active purifies grey water to a higher degree protecting the quality of natural surface and ground waters.

5.Substitute for slow soil percolation sites: For areas with slow soil percolation, Grey Water System is the substitute of a very costly, engineered system.

6.Less toxic chemicals: Energy usage and chemicals used are less in case of Grey water recycling system since the amount of fresh water used is greatly reduced. When using your own electricity and water, the advantage is reduced infrastructure burden. Also, fewer toxic chemicals are dumped when treating wastewater for soil in your own area.

7.Ground water recharge: Grey water helps to recharge ground water

8.Reclamation of nutrients that are wasted otherwise: Nutrient loss is a significant form of erosion of soil. Grey water helps to reclaim nutrients that help in maintaining the fertility.

Grey water recycling systems are commercially available and they help to remove bacteria and pollutants from grey water.

If you are not using grey water, you are wasting money. Use of grey water is a financial advantage. Grey water recycling helps to decrease the capita and operational expenditures of sewage treatment facilities.

Thus, Grey water recycling provides the satisfaction of saving a very important resource.

For most gardeners we want to have more compost than is available. Compost is a great addition to the soil for a variety of reasons. Compost improves the soil drainage while it retains the water better in dry periods. Soil pH is buffered by compost, so the resultant soil pH is closer to about 6.5. Sifted compost is a good seed starting medium, great for those small seeds like carrots.

While the ratio of high carbon to high nitrogen materials doesn’t have to be exact, it does help to make sure that we don’t have too much of one or the other. You need to avoid using all one type of material like lawn clippings or leaves. Get about an even mixture of green materials to get the nitrogen boost, but enough brown materials to buffer the heat of the pile.

Breaking down the physical size of the pieces of compost material for your pile will help speed it up. This reduces the breakdown needed by the pile, and at the same time lets more of the internal structure of the material be exposed to the microbes. Cut up large pieces with a pruner if necessary, use a lawn mower to break down large piles. You may want to buy a small chipper shredder to do a thorough job.

A batch approach works best for fast compost. Once you have a pile working, start another pile or keep your kitchen waste in a kitchen compost pail. Try putting a smaller bin or pail near the back door, and save up the kitchen materials for a larger batch to process.

The more often you can turn the pile, the more active it will be and the faster the compost will break down. This has the dual advantage of bringing fresh composted material into the hotter center of the pile, while improving the air flow throughout the pile as well, refreshing the oxygen supply to the microbial activity in the hot middle of the pile.

The ideal moisture level is a pile that is like a damp cloth. It should not be soaked, as that can cause a slimy, smelly pile, and too little moisture will just bring the activity of the pile to a stop. With this in mind, make sure that you can cover the compost pile when the rainy season arrives. Give these steps a try and see if you don’t start getting compost much more quickly in your compost pile.

Besides a free and nutrient rich fertilizer for your soil and plants there are many other benefits to starting a compost in your yard. A few of the benefits of composting are listed below.

You can reduce or eliminate weeds in your garden by using compost as it prevents weed seeds from sprouting and prospering. This is a natural alternative to pesticides.

Mature compost material has been used to stop or prevent erosion in certain areas.

The binding capability in the compost can keep the soil in place and prevent dangerous drop-offs.

Reducing the amount of organic material that goes to a dump unnecessarily – in turn this reduces the amount of methane gas a dump creates during decomposition.

In wetlands areas that are in trouble, compost has been used to revitalize the soil and surrounding plant life.

Healthier plants, compost material can prevent your plants from contracting diseases that kill or spread to the rest of the crop or garden.

Can create a stable and healthier pH balance in your soil.

If your soil is overly dry (sandy), adding compost to the soil and thoroughly mixing can help the sandy dirt retain more water keeping it moist.

If your soil is clay-like, you can make the dirt easier to work with and less dense by adding mature compost.

Provides important nutrients and micronutrients to the soil and plants.

Increases the temperature of the soil creating a conducive environment for plant growth and health.

This is just a few of the important benefits that can be derived from using compost. It helps the environment, your garden, your plants and the planet. The small amount of time that it takes to set-up and maintain a compost bin or pile is well worth the time and effort.

If you do not have a large backyard or live in an apartment but still want to compost, there are options available. You can still compost easily and conveniently. Some options include composting on a balcony, in your garage, or even under your kitchen sink.

The best way to compost in a small space or indoors is using worms to help with the decomposition process (known as vermicomposting). This is a clean and odor-free way to compost and can be done on a small scale. You will need quite a few worms to start the process. Even though with this method you will add mostly green food (kitchen scraps) the brown food is also necessary (the carbon is needed). A good source of carbon for an indoor composting bin is shredded newspaper – just remember not to use the glossy pages.

You can try a traditional hot compost bin on your balcony taking special care and consideration to turn the pile frequently to eliminate odors. You do not want to alienate your neighbors. You will still need a supply of brown food to use in your compost bin, contact your local gardening center or municipality on the availability of getting this resource for free. Chances are they will be happy to supply you with a bag. You can create your balcony compost bin out of a garbage can with holes drilled through the sides to help with air circulation.

Another option is to look into a communal composting area for your apartment building. Check with the landlord or property management to see if there is a space you and the other residents can utilize to start a compost pile. The mature compost can be used for house plants, balcony gardens, or flower boxes. A schedule will have to be maintained with either everyone sharing in the work or a volunteer that manages the pile

6 SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE COMPOST FASTER THAN THE TRADITIONAL WAY

You can easily make your own compost in about 1-3 months period as against the traditional method by following the simple steps outlined below. Compared to the old ways of composting, where it takes 6-8 months to make a quality compost, this new technique could make you more quality compost in just a short period.

This will boast your production output thus increases your income while giving you more available stock of quality compost in your stock room.

But before we go on the composting process, plan out the following…

Have an available empty bin ready for filling up.

Have a stockpile of brown and green materials used to fill the empty bin.

Make an effort to take about 1-2 hours of your time everyday until your compost is ready for use.

Once you’ve readied your materials for composting, the final activities followed.

6 Simple Ways to Make Compost

1) Place coarse materials at the bottom. Place about a 3-inch layer of any coarse materials available such as; rice straw, corn stalk, hay, grass clippings, grass cuttings, tall weeds, etc. Arrange them near the bottom of the bin. You can chop them to make way for an increase surface for easy and fast decomposition.

2) Build up the pile until desired height is attained. Add 2-3 inch layer of fresh moistened green grass, followed by the same layer thick of brown moistened materials. Repeat the layering and moistening process until the bin is full. The pile should have a wrung-out sponge consistency.

3) Intermix with the use of an Activator. Intermix layers with a nitrogen-rich activator as the stock pile is building up. Place this activator on top of food scraps or any smelly items placed on top of the pile.

4) Cover the compost bin for protection and fast decomposition. To retain moisture and heat while in the process of decomposition and to ward off animals especially rodents. This would also insure a good air flow around and into the bin which contributes for faster decomposing process.

5) Turn the mixture. To make the decomposition faster, you’ve to turn the pile every 7-10 days. This brings also the outer layers into the center where the temperature is at its hottest portion. Turning also creates passages for air flow and moisture, thus causing reheating and faster decomposit0on.

6) Check up for the moisture level content. You’ve got to check the moisture level on a weekly basis. And always add water to maintain its consistency of a wrung-out sponge to get a superior compost material.

With this new methods of composting, you’d always have an available supply of quality compost in a short period. With your ready stock, you’ll not encounter problems when you’re ready to plant continuously the whole year round.

Happy gardening!

6 SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE COMPOST

1) Place coarse materials at the bottom of the bin.

Turning also creates passages for air flow and moisture, thus causing reheating and faster decompositon.

When a homeowner is considering purchasing a composting toilet system, one of the first and most important questions they must answer is whether the system will comply with their local building codes and regulations. This can be a tricky topic, because building codes vary widely across the country. In this article, we will explain some basics about how building codes work in the United States, how to find out if composting toilets are an approved fixture in your area, and how to get them approved if they aren’t already.

As strange as it may seem, the system of building codes and their enforcement in the United States is fairly disorganized. For starters, there is no official building code of the United States, nor is there any federal mandate on how structures are built or inspected. This process is left entirely up to individual states to regulate, and each state does so a little differently. Some states adopt a statewide building code and then mandate that all construction within the state comply. Most states, however, kick the can even further down the road, allowing county or even city governments to adopt and enforce their own building codes, as they see fit. In some small towns and many rural areas of the U.S., there are actually no building codes whatsoever in force.

If you are unsure about the building codes in your area or what office has jurisdiction over your home, the best place to start is with your most local form of government. If you live in a city or town, call city hall and inquire if there is a building department. If you don’t live in a town or if your town has no building department, then move on to the county level, and from there, the state level. Eventually, you will find someone knowledgeable about building codes in your area.

Ideally, all this legwork should be done before you purchase your composting toilet. However, many homeowners install composting toilet systems first, only to discover later that they are in violation of their local building codes, and then they are issued a correction notice. If you’ve discovered that composting toilets are not on the list of “approved” plumbing fixtures in your city, don’t worry. It may be easier than you think to get your system approved.

Remember that the goal of all building codes is to protect citizen’s safety by promoting responsible building techniques and use of good building materials. Therefore, you will need to demonstrate to your building officials that your composting toilet system is safe and non-polluting. The best way to do this is to provide them with copies of the product instruction and installation manual, as well as any testing reports and certifications or listings that the toilet model itself has earned through nationally recognized independent testing organizations. The National Sanitation Foundation, or NSF, is one such organization that independently tests and certifies composting toilet systems to comply with the American National Standards Institute’s standard for compost toilets. Essentially this means that the NSF has tested the system to be odorless, non-polluting, and to produce an end-compost that is pathogen free to the extent that it won’t make anyone ill. This certification will carry a lot of weight with your building department, so don’t neglect to include such information, if it’s available.

Doing your homework about local building code is important anytime you make a modification to your home, and particularly so if you’re considering installing a composting toilet system. If your home is found to be in violation of building codes, it can spell trouble down the road, especially when it comes time to sell your house. By taking the time to investigate your building code now, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and hassle later, and you’ll also help to promote and raise awareness about eco-friendly forms of sustainable waste management.

As our nation faces water shortages and water crises in heavily populated areas like California, composting toilets continue to gain popularity as a water-saving alternative to traditional toilets. Their growing usage, however, leads many families and homeowners to wonder, are they a good solution for my home? Particularly for families with children, there are some special considerations to take into account.

The needs of families with children will vary, depending on the ages of the kids in the home. If you have young children, for example, potty training may be a consideration. First, you’ll want to evaluate the seat height of the toilet. Many composting toilets, specifically self-contained units, feature very tall seat heights. Some even have built-in stools or footrests, making it easier for an adult to step up to the seat. For a child, this would obviously create a problem in getting to the toilet on their own.

Young children are notorious for wanting to flush various objects down the toilet-any parent who’s ever fished a watch or rubber ducky or other item out of their toilet bowl is well aware of this. With a composting toilet, reaching the lost object may not be so simple. One of the biggest pros to modern composting toilets is that they’re designed in such a way that the homeowner does not have to come into contact with the waste until it is fully composted. However, if you think your child has dropped something down into the toilet, you may find yourself donning some gloves and sifting through waste to get at the lost item. Thus, it’s important that parents of young children take the time to impress upon their kids the importance of not putting any foreign objects in the toilet. Another easy alternative is to install a child-proof toilet seat and lid, so that children cannot lift up the lid without your assistance.

If you have older adolescents to young teens in your home, you may also need to discuss the importance of not putting things like wet wipes, tampons, or sanitary pads into the toilet. The only things that should go in a composting toilet are waste and toilet paper. Everything else belongs in the garbage can.

The amount of toilet paper used may also be another conversation to have with kids, though this isn’t a topic just for homes with composting toilets. Many parents have had to use a plunger to unclog a traditional toilet when a child has used half the roll of toilet paper and tried to flush. With a compost toilet, the issue isn’t that it won’t flush, but rather that using too much paper will affect the capacity of the unit itself. Capacities of composting toilets are typically based on the number of people using the fixture each day. If someone is adding a huge amount of toilet paper, this will of course have an impact.

Last but not least, homeowners with composting toilet systems should take the time to explain to their kids about the regular maintenance of the unit. Usually this involves adding some bulking material, such as a peat moss/wood chip mixture, each day and turning a crank on the outside of the toilet, which in turn rotates the inner drum. Once children are old enough, get them involved in these daily activities. The more they know about the system, the less likely they are to do something that might potentially harm it.

Composting toilets are a wonderful alternative to traditional toilets, and they can be used virtually anywhere. For families with children, they are still a very viable alternative to traditional toilets, provided that parents explain to and educate their kids about the toilet. Plus, by introducing your kids to an eco friendly fixture like a composting toilet while they are young, you’ll be making a positive impact on their lifelong tendency toward a green lifestyle.
